Discovery Channels ‘Storm Chasers’

Storm Chasers is due to start in just over an hours time here in the UK with the 1st episode of 2011 set to carry on an already awesome season. Episode 6 and 7 are on back to back tonight and for one am rather excited about watching it. But are you? What do you think when you watch the show? Do you think they are sad for doing it? Do you think it is something you would like to do one day? Or have you already been out there and chased?

I would love the chance to chase across the Great Plains and I would also love to be apart of the hit series Storm Chasers. I would love to be like Reed and Tim etc collecting scientific data to help in future forecasts of such monsters and also help the warning time for such events. I would also fancy a go in the TIV with Sean and co and intercept a tornado full on. WOW that would be awesome.

If you watch it, or you have already seen it, please, let me know what you thought of the show and if you are a fan of the series.

2011

Well we are just a few days into the new year now and I am already getting excited about the 2011 storm season here in the UK. Now I know its not a patch on the US season but its still something to look forward to.

I wont lie to you, I would much rather be chasing in Tornado Alley than the back roads of Lancashire, but I have set myself some targets this year. My main aim is to get a few funnel cloud images, some great storm structure images and have a great time. Last year I caught some amazing cells and this year I want to beat them. I want to get myself under a rotating cell, as close to the rotation as possible without putting me or my team in danger, and I want footage of a funnel/tornado coming down, if funds allow, I want to buy a weather station and attach it to the roof of my chase vehicle and hopefully get some scientific data from such an event.

But first, we need to get the rest of the winter out of the way, and it looks like more snow could occur across the UK over the coming days, as a deepening Low moves in from the N bringing cold, polar air with it. Wet weather is moving in and some of this will turn to snow in places, the snow could be heavy and prolonged making driving conditions trecherous. Temps will drop below freezing in places so it looks like the winter hasnt done with us yet!

Travel Distruption

Lastnights snowfall totalled out here in Blackburn, Lancashire at 4 inches. Traffic has been distrupted quite bad with most taxi firms in the area ceasing to operate lastnight, which made it hard to get home for many of the party goers enjoying ‘Mad Friday’.

I have friends who are still stuck at their works parties due to impassable roads. The M6 lastnight came to a standstill around Manchester and Bolton due to the trecherous conditions.

Today is going to be a hard day for football fans travelling to the football games around the NW. Alot of snow is still on the ground on main roads, and with the outlook for today it doesnt seem to promising.

Today sees upwards of 4 inches on the ground for many this morning, snowfall has eased alot since lastnight and the early hours of this morning, and it should stop fully in the next hour or so. Although the odd snow shower is still likely in places across the region as the Low which has passed us is now circulating the snow around its centre forcing the snow back over us. Depending on how quickly the Low moves depends on how long this snow could last. This afternoon most places should remain dry with clearing skies and sunny intervals, other places could still see thick clouds and as already mentioned more snow. As the clouds clear and the sun comes out, temperatures are expected to drop and remain below freezing throughout the day. It is these freezing temperatures which is a concern as lying snow will become very icy, meaning road surfaces, especially untreated ones will be very slippy and in places dangerous.

Take extra care when out and about and always refer to the highways agency.

Hopefully images and video will be uploaded later :)

Snowfall in the NW

Well the snow has been falling steadily here now for the past couple of hours. I have just measured it and there is just under 4cm on the ground here in Blackburn, Lancashire. The sky is looking full of it and the charts show this could be here into tomorrow morning. Between 5-10cm is possible and possibly more in places. Please stay safe out there
